Private Residence

Lake Wallenpaupack, PA

Lake Wallenpaupack is Pennsylvania’s third largest lake with 52 miles of breathtaking shoreline. Nestled atop the highest point on the southern tip of the lake with unparalleled vistas of the full 13 mile long lake is a 7,000 sf - three level vacation home designed for a Manhattan business man and his family to rekindle his family trips to the lake in the late 1970’s and early 80’s. Designed as a summer and holiday home for a large multi-generational family, Core took it to the next level creating a refined modern interpretation of a rugged Adirondack style retreat of the great summer camps in the Adirondack mountains. Indicative of this style is the rusticated stone base and large heavy timber beams that make up the building’s exterior support structure.

The building is orientated high on the lake bluff to maximize the views of the lake from all three levels. Designed for entertaining and outdoor living, the rear side of the home has expansive terraces and is completely transparent with full height European aluminum clad French doors and tilt turn windows that brings the outdoors in and expands the living space.

When one first arrives to the well secluded home, the front façade presents a very simple rustic composition with small punctured windows and heavy masonry, emphasizing privacy and security. You get a subtle glimpse of the lake  from the approaching driveway. Purposely designed to peak the visitor’s curiosity the front façade creates a sense of excitement to experience more.

Upon entering the dwelling, you see the rusticness of the Adirondack style echoed from the exterior but with a much more heightened refinement. Flagstone floors, mahogany millwork, coffered ceilings and Frank Lloyd Wright inspired elements such as the horizontal interlocking stone slab fireplace and prairie style stained glass motifs are exquisite. The most dramatic feature upon entering the home is the vast column free space of this 44 ft deep home, which immediately upon opening the front door, exposes full panoramic views of the lake.

With creature comforts like a large spa underneath the round terrace, stone slab waterfall swimming pool, home gym, wine cellar, the “diving board” patio, projecting out over the bluff, and the third floor master bedroom with the best view on the entire lake, this home checks all the boxes for this tight knit family who have been drawn to this lakeside making family memories for decades.
